The German text and the production come from the collaboration between Heppner and Perón. It wasn't until 2014 that the piece was officially published for the first time on the sampler Der Eisenberg Sampler - Vol. Due to the later conflicts between the two Wolfsheim members Peter Heppner and Markus Reinhardt, the title was initially kept under lock and key after the duo broke up. The piece was written in 1990 in collaboration with the Swiss musician Carlos Perón, but was not published at the time. The German synth-pop duo Wolfsheim made use of the piece as early as 1990 and wrote a German-language version entitled Übergrün Wiesen. In the US, it reached number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 22 in the Billboard Hot R&B / Hip-Hop Songs. It was number one hit on the British singles chart, reached number 2 in Enya's home country Ireland and also made it into the top 10 in most other European countries. Ready or Not became an international success and reached top positions in the charts in numerous countries.

Enya waived a lawsuit, but her name was subsequently stuck on the plates. In 1996 the band Fugees, consisting of Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill and Pras Michel, used the song as a sample for their hit Ready or Not, but without asking Enya for permission in advance.
